call to action

TAKE ACTION: SIGN LETTER TO PROTECT AND TO SUPPORT HOUSING FUNDING

Help Ensure THUD Appropriations Subcommittees Have Highest Possible Funding for Housing Programs in FY16

The House and Senate Committees on Appropriations will decide soon how much funding each appropriations subcommittee will receive in FY16. This funding allocation for subcommittees, called the 302(b), will determine how much money is available for HUD programs in FY16.

It is critical that the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (THUD) Subcommittees in the House and Senate receive 302(b) allocations that are at the highest possible levels. Adequate 302(b) allocations will help ensure that the THUD Subcommittees have the resources they need to fully fund all housing programs.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

The THUD allocation provides essential capital and program funding that enables public and private partners to help more than five million seniors, people with disabilities, and others afford stable and safe housing, promote lasting community and family economic success, build critical transportation infrastructure, and spur economic development in communities. Through these investments, Congress reduces homelessness and housing instability, supports small-business job creation, expands our nation’s infrastructure capacity, and encourages economic recovery and growth.

HUD community development funding has been reduced by nearly 30% since FY2010. HUD funded agencies are routinely overwhelmed by applications for rental assistance, and years-long wait lists for assistance are dishearteningly normal. The cuts have caused the loss of 70,000 rental assistance opportunities for low income families since 2013.
