Politico Reports: Homeless Housing Advocates Rally Outside Leaders’ Offices

Hi Everyone –

The fight continues for the $2 billion appropriation from last year linked to an MOU between the governor and the legislature.

Now that the legislature is back in session, it is a bit easier to focus on the legislature as well as the governor because they are all pretty much in the same building. It was more difficult off session when they were all in their districts. – Toni

Homeless Housing Advocates Rally Outside Leaders’ Offices

Advocates for homeless New Yorkers marched through the Capitol on Tuesday to push Gov. Andrew Cuomo and legislative leaders to fund supportive housing units.

In September, Cuomo said he would sign a memorandum of understanding to release $2 billion for affordable housing as part of a larger multi-year expansion effort. The leaders of the Senate and Assembly have failed to come to an agreement with the governor on the MOU.

Demonstrators marched to the offices of Cuomo, Independent Democratic Conference leader Jeff Klein and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie asking for support.

A representative for Heastie addressed protesters outside the speaker’s office.

“The speaker supports ending homelessness, we’re going to work to do it in this budget, you have our support,” the representative said.

Assemblyman Jose Rivera, a Bronx Democrat, also joined the protesters.
