Job Title: Building Porter
Job location: 870 East 162nd Street, Bronx, NY
Department: SP-SRO, Supportive Housing, single room occupancy
FLSA : Non-Exempt
Reports to: Program Director and Building Superintendent
Hours: 35 hours per week – in person
Program hours: The office is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday but depending on
specific assignments, staff may need to report earlier or work later and maybe on a weekend when
directed by the Program Director and/ or Building Superintendent
Salary: $18.00 per hour, with a comprehensive benefits package
Effective : June 2026

Program Description: Geel East 162nd Street HDFC, AKA Archie’s Place, is a six story, elevated building located in Community Board 2 in the Longwood section of the Bronx, New York. The property is conveniently located to public transportation; IRT numbers 2 and 5 subway lines and the numbers 4, 4A, 6, and 17 bus lines. The single site property is comprised of seventy (70) studio units and a one-bedroom unit for the Building Superintendent. The building is totally handicapped accessible. In addition to the residential areas, the facility has a multi-purpose room (meetings, recreation, and dining); small community kitchen; laundry room; and social service staff offices. On the first floor there are the administrative offices, conference room, waiting area, security/reception office, and access to the patio, athletic court, and garden in the rear. The property has 24/7 on site
security.

Essential Job Responsibilities and Role of the Building Porter:

The Building Porter is responsible for the overall upkeep of the physical building and associated grounds. This includes the following responsibilities:
o Daily cleaning of all common areas including halls; community rooms; laundry room; and bathrooms.
o Daily sweeping of front steps, walkways and patios
• Daily control of trash compacter room
o Replace trash liners daily
o Maintain and monitor upkeep of system
• Report to the Program Director and/or Building Super immediately any conditions that pose a threat to the safety of building residents or staff so they be addressed expeditiously
• Report to the Program Director and/or Building Super any conditions in the building or in the outdoor spaces that need to be addressed to maintain the integrity and overall appearance of the project
• In the absence of the Building Super and only under the direction of the Program Director and/or Building Super, the Building Porter may be required to do the following:
• Ensure code compliance with all regulatory agencies
• Testing monitoring of building fire safety and security systems
o Maintain daily log of all inspections
o Maintain contact with vendors who supply systems and schedule semi-annual inspections
o Daily inspect lighting systems in common areas and emergency light signs
o Monthly check and replace defective smoke and fire detectors and carbon Monoxide Detectors
o Monthly check of all fire extinguishers
o Conduct quarterly Fire Drills
• Daily control of boiler room
o Test water pumps, pressure valves, and hot water heaters
o Maintain and monitor upkeep of system
• Building and apartment inspections
o Assist exterminator on regular scheduled appointments and monitor all pest control
o Check all plumbing fixtures and repair as needed
o Check building roof and clear debris from gutters and leaders
• Monitor maintenance of floor lift and/or elevator
o Coordinate service and inspection appointments
o Weekly cleaning of area
o Lubricate parts as needed

Qualifications and Requirements
Education: The preference for this position is that the applicant has obtained a High School Diploma or higher but will consider an individual with exceptional skills provided that they can document proven ability in working in this setting.

Experience: This position requires that the applicant have at least 1 years’ experience working in the capacity of a building porter but will consider those exceptional individuals based on their previous experience. The preference is that this individual be bi-lingual in Spanish and English.

Physical Requirements
• Must be able to access apartments above first floor with or without elevator access.
• Must be able to travel to different locations
• Must be able to demonstrate proper cleaning /apartment maintenance methods
• Must be able to lift heavy items (garbage bags, etc.)
• Must always wear Personal Protective Equipment when completing many of assigned tasks
